West Liberty was built where two railroad lines crossed, and it was incorporated in 1868. It sits in Muscatine County about five miles south of I-80 on old Highway 6, and about 3,900 people live there. A-1 Sewer Service drives out from our shop off Bay Ridge Ave on the south side of Iowa City, about 30 minutes away, to clear drains, replace water heaters and handle plumbing for West Liberty homes and small businesses. Call (319) 600-4224 or use the contact form.

The streets around downtown have houses from the late 1800s and early 1900s, and most of them have been worked on more than once. We often find three eras of plumbing in one house: the original cast iron or clay in the ground, galvanized supply pipe inside the walls that has narrowed from rust, and a section of newer copper or plastic where somebody fixed something in the 1980s. The places where those meet are where leaks start and drains slow down.
A house like that usually has a few symptoms. Water pressure at the kitchen faucet is weak. The tub drains slowly. Nobody can say exactly when it started. We begin by finding the real cause. That could be a main line that's been catching grease for years, or a section of pipe that has reached the end of its life. We'll tell you which one it is and what your choices are.

The township was first named Wapsinonoc, which comes from a word for a smooth, winding stream, and the creek still runs through the area. Most of the ground around West Liberty is flat or gently sloped. When a storm sits over town, the water spreads out and slowly drains off, and basements take the hit. Floor drains back up, sump pumps run all night, and downspouts that empty near the foundation send the water straight back in.
We install and replace sump pumps, extend downspouts, and bury drain lines so water leaves the property. In an older house, a sump pump with a working check valve and a discharge line that's pitched correctly is one of the best things you can add. If you've got a wet basement and don't know why, we'll look at the pump, the downspouts and the grading before we suggest anything bigger.

West Liberty has a downtown of local shops and restaurants, a large employer in West Liberty Foods, and a school district that started the state's first dual-language program in 1998. Small business owners have the same drain trouble that homeowners do, except a clog on a Friday night costs them customers. We clear kitchen lines, restroom drains and floor drains in shops and restaurants, and we'll work around your hours if we can.
At home, the calls are familiar. The kitchen sink empties slowly. The washing machine drain backs up into the basement floor drain. The toilet gurgles when someone showers. Each one means a line is partly blocked. Clearing it early is a smaller job than waiting for it to stop completely.

Hard water is tough on water heaters in eastern Iowa. Minerals settle at the bottom of the tank, and a heater that pops or rumbles, takes a long time to recover, or leaks at the base is close to done. We install tank and tankless units and can explain which one fits your house. The water heater installation page goes through the process.
For everything else, the plumber page lists what we do. That includes faucets, toilets, sinks, tubs, showers and leak repair. If you're redoing a bathroom in an older house, we can tell you what else to replace while the wall is open.

The Muscatine County Fair fills West Liberty every July. The Rock Island Railroad depot, built in 1897, is still standing. Many families have been here for generations, and others arrived more recently. West Liberty is the first town in Iowa where Hispanic residents became the majority, and it has a community that's close and visible. People notice who shows up. We clean up after ourselves and explain what we did.

We cover all of West Liberty, from downtown and Highway 6 to the newer streets on the edge of town, along with farms and acreages nearby. We also work in Iowa City, Coralville and Kalona. The projects page has examples of finished work, and the drain cleaning page explains how a drain cleaning call goes.

“10 Stars if I could. Coming from someone who builds systems and processes for a 9 figure company, Andy does it all right and keeps it simple. Easy to find in search, stands out in reviews, easy to see why. Answered the phone 8am first try, flexible to when I needed, arrived within hours of first contact. Followups easy in text. Got pertinent info, walked the house, got to work, fixed it and another issue after quick run to store for parts. More than reasonable price. In my phone for next time if I ever need it! Thanks Andy!”
“I’ve had a recurring issue for years with my floor drain backing up. Andy at A1 Sewer Services was the first one to do a more thorough inspection rather than just clearing out the line. He also discovered a crack in my clean out which I had him repair to prevent worse issues down the road. I highly recommend A1 for sewer and drain issues.”
“First time using A1 and I can’t say enough positive. Andy came within the hour that I called to unclog a basement floor drain. He was very thorough and checked to make sure the blockage was not coming from more than one area. He cleaned it out in a short time, got things moving and had good suggestions to help minimize future problems. Reasonable charges for good work and an honest pleasant person. Highly recommended.”
Yes. We'll tell you what you have, what shape it's in, and whether it makes sense to repair or replace it.
