Why Coralville basements get wet

The town takes its name from the fossil coral beds along the Iowa River, and the river has shaped almost everything since. The Coralville Dam was built to hold back floodwater, and the reservoir behind it is now a place to boat and camp. In 2008 the river and reservoir were both pushed to their limits, and plenty of people in town remember the sandbags.

You don't have to live next to the water to feel it. In a lot of Coralville the water table sits high, and the ground stays saturated for days after a heavy rain. A basement that stays dry in Cedar Rapids might seep here. That's why a sump pump is standard equipment in this town, and why the old one in your pit deserves more attention than it usually gets.

Most pumps last about ten years. Plenty of the houses in Coralville were built from the 1960s through the 1990s, which means a lot of original pumps are still down there. Some signs yours is going: it runs all the time, it clicks on and off every few seconds, it makes a grinding noise, or there's water standing in the pit after it runs. Another one is a pit with no check valve, so the water the pump just moved drains back in.

We replace pumps and set up the discharge line so it ends well away from the foundation. We also look at the downspouts. A downspout that empties two feet from the wall is sending water straight back where it came from. Extending it, or burying a drain line out to the yard, is a cheap fix that people skip for years.

Drains for homes and businesses

Coralville has more commercial space than you'd guess for a city its size. Hotels and restaurants cluster around Coral Ridge Mall, the Iowa River Landing area has shops and offices, and First Avenue and Highway 6 carry a steady stream of businesses. Kitchen lines in restaurants fill up with grease. Hotel plumbing runs hard on weekends. Older office buildings often have a main line nobody has looked at in years. If you run a business here and want to schedule a cleaning before you have a problem, tell us when you're closed and we'll plan around it.

At home, the calls sound different but mean the same thing. The kitchen sink takes a long time to empty. The tub drains slowly. The toilet gurgles when the washer drains, or a floor drain smells after a storm. Each of those is a line that's partly blocked. It's a short job now, and a messy one if you wait for a full backup. The drain cleaning page has more on how our drain cleaning works.

Plumbing and water heaters

Beyond drains, we install faucets, toilets, sinks, tubs and showers, fix leaks, and swap out water heaters. The plumber page has the details. A tank heater in eastern Iowa lasts a shorter time than the label says, since hard water leaves scale on the bottom. If yours is past ten years old, it's smart to plan the replacement before it floods the utility room. We install both tank and tankless units, and the water heater installation page explains the difference.

“I’ve had a recurring issue for years with my floor drain backing up. Andy at A1 Sewer Services was the first one to do a more thorough inspection rather than just clearing out the line. He also discovered a crack in my clean out which I had him repair to prevent worse issues down the road. I highly recommend A1 for sewer and drain issues.”

“First time using A1 and I can’t say enough positive. Andy came within the hour that I called to unclog a basement floor drain. He was very thorough and checked to make sure the blockage was not coming from more than one area. He cleaned it out in a short time, got things moving and had good suggestions to help minimize future problems. Reasonable charges for good work and an honest pleasant person. Highly recommended.”

“Fantastic service! Called, told him the bottom of my water heater is leaking, sent him pics of everything and he was out the next day replacing it at a reasonable price! Highly recommend 👌 Thank you!”

Common questions

Questions from Coralville homeowners

My gutters look fine. Why is the basement wet?

Gutters only collect the water. The downspout decides where it goes. If it lands within a few feet of the wall, it soaks into the soil beside your foundation and comes in through the floor or wall. Extend the downspout or bury a line, and the problem often gets much better.

How long should a sump pump last?

About ten years is typical, sometimes less if it runs a lot. If you can't remember installing yours, it's older than you think.

Can you clean a drain in a small business?

Yes. Call and tell us what's going on. Restaurants, offices and shops all have drains, and we work around opening hours where we can.

How long does it take you to get to Coralville?

Most Coralville addresses are about 10 minutes from our shop on the south side of Iowa City. Traffic on Highway 6 and First Avenue can add a few minutes at rush hour, and the time depends on where our crew is when you call.
